What Every Aspiring Model Should Know

Be well informed. There are people out there that are prey to taking advantage of inspiring models both financially and physically. How many times have we heard stories of new models extorted in thousands of dollars to join a “top agency” that no one has heard of that promises the world and offers nothing? There are people out there who say they are “professional photographers” who do act in unprofessional manners.

The industry coins these people as “GWCs” or ‘guys with cameras’ (not strictly limited to the male species but they are more common), who are more interested in being a voyeur than being a professional. Ask to see the photographer’s body of work, listen to what other models who have been involved their shoots in the past say about them, what does the industry say about them? Make sure you sign a model release and this release mentions that the photographer has acted in a professional manner.

All this background research will ensure your safety. If you do not feel comfortable with the photographer for any reason, do not need to shoot with him/her. If you are meeting a photographer for the first time and new are a starting out model, let your agent or a trusted person know who you are meeting, the time, their address and their contact phone number as a safety precaution.
